The Symphony of Artistry:

A Journey Through Life’s Melodies by Shu-ya Hsu

by Viviana Puello.

In Shu-ya Hsu’s vibrant and expressive world, art becomes a harmonious symphony, a melody woven through her life experiences, passions, and memories. Her artwork, rich with emotional depth, encompasses a variety of styles, including realistic portraits and whimsical imagery, inviting us into a world where everyday moments are captured with profound sensitivity and joy. Shu-ya Hsu’s creations, marked by their rich narratives and vibrant execution, speak to the depth of her artistic journey and the multifaceted nature of her inspirations.

Shu-ya Hsu’s artwork is a testament to her profound connection with the world around her. Her artistic journey commenced with realism, showcasing her meticulous attention to detail and profound love for her surroundings. In her early works, such as “School’s Buildings & Students’ Activities,” she depicted the familiar and beloved scenes of her career as a high school teacher. These paintings not only serve as a tribute to her years of teaching but also highlight her technical prowess and ability to capture the essence of her subjects with precision.

“My First Granddaughter Ansley” Pastel, 2023 by Shu-Ya Hsu.

My first granddaughter Ansley who loves music ,too. She just puts the earphone to enjoy her lovely music.

“Winter Scenery of Europe” Watercolor, 54x38cm, 2023 by Shu-Ya Hsu.

When I was young, I took a trip to Europe(however, I forgot which country),I was born and live in Taiwan-the sub-tropical zone, in our country, we rarely see snow; therefore, I saw the snow for the first time in Europe. It was an amazing memory for me.

The transformative power of Shu-ya Hsu’s art is evident as she navigates through different phases of her life. Her piece “My First Lovely Granddaughter Ansley” encapsulates a tender moment filled with her granddaughter’s joy and innocence. The use of pastel brings a soft, warm texture to the artwork, enhancing the sense of intimacy and affection. The artwork’s simplicity belies its emotional depth, inviting viewers to share in the artist’s joy.

As Shu-ya Hsu’s life experiences evolved, so did her artistic style. Faced with personal challenges, such as her mother’s Alzheimer’s disease, she turned to art as a powerful means of emotional expression and release. This transformative period gave birth to her second solo exhibition, “Animals’ Faces,” held in a hospital to bring joy to patients and caretakers. Her art became a beacon of hope and happiness, a therapeutic outlet that resonated with many.

Shu-ya Hsu’s exploration of imagery reached new heights with her series “Inside Windows, Outside Windows, the Days & the Nights.” Painted during her walks around the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, these works blend the realistic with the imaginative, reflecting her internal landscape as much as the external one. The paintings from this series capture fleeting moments of beauty and contemplation, showcasing her ability to merge observation with introspection.

“Music is Everywhere” Oil Painting, 89x130cm, 2017 by Shu-Ya Hsu.

I like music and painting. I am the member of choir in the church; therefore, I paint several children whose mouths and eyes become notes, and the works of Keith Haring (comic little figures) also are notes.

One of her most vibrant pieces, “Music is Everywhere,” stands as a testament to her love for music and her membership in a church choir. This oil painting is a delightful fusion of sight and sound, where children’s facial expressions transform into musical notes. The influence of Keith Haring is apparent in the playful, comic-like figures that dance across the canvas. This artwork embodies the joyous and universal nature of music, illustrating how it transcends boundaries and unites us all in its harmonious embrace.

Despite the challenges of aging and health, Shu-ya Hsu remains undeterred in her artistic pursuits. Her resilience and adaptability are evident in her continuous evolution as an artist. After undergoing cataract surgery, she embraced a more abstract style, blending her observations with imaginative elements. Her recent exhibition, “Facebooks during the Epidemic,” is a testament to this new direction, where ordinary objects morph into faces, symbolizing the diverse and interconnected experiences of the pandemic.

Remember this text: Shu-ya Hsu’s artistry is not confined to a single genre or style. Her willingness to experiment and adapt ensures that her work remains fresh and relevant. As she moves towards abstract painting, her vision remains clear: to continue creating, exploring, and expressing through her art.

Shu-ya Hsu’s art is a rich tapestry of life’s moments woven with care, emotion, and skill. Each piece tells a story, invites reflection, and evokes a sense of wonder.
